First Reconciliation & First Eucharist

Sacramental Preparation at St. Joseph Catholic Church – Vacaville

The Sacramental Preparation Program at St. Joseph Catholic Church prepares children to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion for the first time. The program is intended for children in 2nd grade and older who have not yet celebrated these sacraments.

Program Overview

Sacramental Preparation is a two-year journey of faith. Children become eligible to begin the program after completing at least one year in our Family of Faith Ministry or by being enrolled at St. Joseph Catholic School.

Throughout this preparation, children deepen their understanding of the sacraments while growing in their relationship with Jesus Christ and becoming active members of the parish community.

Parent & Child Commitment

Participation in the Family of Faith Ministry is only one part of sacramental preparation. Families are expected to actively participate in the following:

  • Monthly Parent & Child Formation Sessions led by our Family of Faith catechists. Attendance is essential. Please refer to the current Family of Faith calendar for dates and times.
  • At-Home Learning using the provided Reconciliation and Eucharist materials. Parents are expected to work with their children between formation sessions.
  • First Reconciliation Retreat & Prayer Service held in February, providing preparation, practice, and the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
  • First Holy Communion Retreat, Rehearsal & Mass held in June, culminating in your child’s First Holy Communion.

Faith Knowledge Requirements

Children preparing for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist should be able to understand and demonstrate knowledge of the following:

  • The Sign of the Cross
  • The Our Father
  • The Hail Mary
  • The Glory Be
  • Grace Before Meals
  • The Act of Contrition
